Adult Life Programs

“Adult Life Programs has allowed my loved one to enjoy life; to lead as near to a normal life as possible.  She has so many friends now and interacts with people rather than being afraid and withdrawn.  Adult Life Programs has changed her life and I am a happier and better caregiver to her because of it.”

Welcome to Adult Life Programs:

A Leader in Adult Day Care Services

The Adult Life Programs' story

Adult Life Programs is a nonprofit organization 501(c)(3) that began in 1983 in a Sunday school classroom at Corinth Church in Hickory, North Carolina.  Much has changed over the years, but Adult Life Programs’ Board of Directors has remained committed to the mission:

To provide support, respite and education to caregivers and affordable, quality day and treatment services enabling adults to remain in their communities.

Adult Life Programs’ First Annual Cake Walk

“Takes the Cake”

Adult Life Programs held its first annual “A Sweet Way to Help” cake walk fundraiser on Saturday, May 2nd at the First Presbyterian Church of Hickory. With a couple hundred people in attendance, the day was deemed a success!

The event began with City Manager Mick Berry declaring May 2, 2009, Adult Life Programs Day in the City of Hickory. Then, the “walking” began! The first walk was to win something chocolate; something VERY chocolate! The winner of the first round took home a Flat Rock chocolate brownie weighing several pounds! Subsequent “walks” included Bistro 1.2.7.’s Tiramisu Torte, Pleasers Applesauce Cake, Youssef 242’s NY Style Oreo Cheesecake and Liazzo’s German chocolate cake, just to name a few.

Walkers of all ages circled around a 10’ cake, dancing and singing along at times to music provided by DJ Superfly. Two Clyde Campbell Unicycle Club members showed off their skills and rode their unicycles around the large cake.  Attendees had the chance to preview the cakes prior to walking. One of the most popular walks was for Catawba Country Club’s chocolate cake with buttercream frosting and hot fudge topping and Café Gouda’s praline carmel cake.

The big cake

Attendees who were not walking, were busy sampling cake slices, learning a few cake decorating tips and hoping to be the highest bidder on silent auction items. Beef O’Brady’s chocolate eruption cake created quite a stir and there was a small bidding war. In the end, Wilma Austin proudly took it home on a crystal cake plate.

Doin' the cake walk

Kids of all ages enjoyed decorating cupcakes, balloon animals, face painting, watching the cake walkers,

socializing and buying cakes at the bake sale which included old favorites: red velvet, coconut and pound cake. In addition, there were some unique offerings such as pistachio, blackberry wine pound cake, oatmeal cakes and a couple “old timey” Barbie doll cakes with hoop skirts. A special donation of a chicken pie (an Adult Life Programs classic) was made by Chris Gantt.

A highlight of the event was the announcement of the winners in the cake baking competition among long term care facilities. Catawba Valley Living at Rock Barn won in the best tasting category with their entry of a Sundrop Pound Cake. McDowell House, Inc. won in the most original entry category with their very impressive “MacDowell” cake which looked uncannily similar to a hamburger!

Attendees left already talking about next year’s event. So, we’ll see you at the Cake Walk!

And the winner is...

What is Adult Day Care?

Adult Day Care provides a safe, supportive environment for individuals who generally cannot be safely left at home alone during the day.  Adult Day Care services delay or prevent institutionalization by providing alternative care and enabling adults to remain in their home and communities.  It is a great option for functionally impaired adults who may benefit from socialization, support services, recreation and meals in a supervised social setting. This service also provides respite for caregivers so that they can continue to work, manage a household and have that much needed time for themselves.  It is a win-win situation for both the participant and caregiver.
